iPad 2 Said Set For February Production, iPhone 5 Rumored in May

Fresh Apple gossip out of China today. The rumored Apple iPad 2, update to the current iPad tablet, is now expected to begin production in February. Another hot tip is that the anticipated iPhone 5 will be built in volume starting in May. This speculation comes from Apple site Apple Insider reporting on an article recently published by China’s Commercial Times.

If there’s truth to these stories, then it appears the iPad 2 is on track for an anticipated launch in April of this year. In addition, ramping up iPhone 5 manufacturing in May will make an iPhone 5 launch in June even more likely. Apple typically announces an iPhone model update every June.

It remains to seen, however, which carrier will receive the new iPhone first. It will in all probability be a 4G handset though. Having just received the iPhone 4, Verizon has been touting its 4G LTE wireless data network to much fanfare ever since last December. AT&T is also rumored to have plans for integrating LTE technology as well.

Whether the iPhone 5 goes to AT&T first, to placate loyal subscribers, or a simultaneous AT&T/Verizonlaunch occurs, owners of the Verizon iPhone 4 will be pretty jealous.
